2012 Trip
In 2011 I went back to Kenya - the iconic country for big game safaris. Such an extremely satisfying photography trip deserves to be shared. And this year I'm visiting again. I'm taking four days in Mombasa to dive in the Indian Ocean (while a few friends carry on the safari). Join us!

Trip SummaryAffordable Photo Safari Eastern Kenya
June 5-18, 2012 - $3250 (plus Air) based on 12 guests
Nairobi . Amboseli . Tsavo West .Tsavo East . Mombasa . Nairobi Optional four days of scuba from Mombasa with www.buccaneerdiving.com This safari begins in Nairobi, the capital and largest city in Kenya. Our adventure starts at Nairobi's own game park – a recovery day after long travel and a preview of the wonders to come. Nairobi National Park is 117 square kilometers of savannah boasting 400 species of birds and 100 mammals including rare black rhinos, lions, cape buffalo, and leopards. Our next stop is Amboseli, one of Kenya's most famous game parks located in the Rift Valley on the border of Tanzania, with glorious views of Mt Kilimanjaro. Animals abound: large herds of elephants, leopards, cheetah, giraffe, and many many more along with 600 species of birds. Local Maasai villages offer opportunities to see the contemporary culture of this tribe. On day six we head through Amobseli, south to Tsavo West. Tsavo West, is over 9000 square kilometers and boasts well – everything including volcanoes and springs famous for hippos, savannah ecosystems comprised of open grasslands, scrub-lands, and acacia woodlands, belts of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges – this means giraffes and zebras, hornbills and impalas, lions and mongoose, hyrax and dik-dik: a classic game park experience.
On day eight we become two groups. Divers head for four days in Mombasa diving on a barrier reef in the Indian Ocean. NOTE: This is winter diving! Non-divers enjoy these days in Tsavo East continuing an exploration of the wonderful landscapes and animals of Kenya's game parks. Tsavo East is the largest of the parks we visit and includes the famous Luguard falls and Yatta plateau. We gather again on day 12 in Mombasa for a day of relaxation on the beach or in the city: one of the oldest cities on the African coast and the largest port in Kenya – then head home via the historic overnight train to Nairobi and our flights back to the US. We will travel with four guests per van and each van will have an experienced driver/guide throughout our trip. All accommodations are in game lodges with private bathrooms (except for one night in a tented camp, with shared bathroom and showers - just for the experience). Airfare to Nairobi, the Kenyan visa, tips and personal expenses, and a few meals are your only other expenses. Most meals, all lodging and park fees, and in-country transportation are included in the cost. The detailed Itinerary and Application/Release forms are available for download above Comparable trips range from $5000 - $12,000 plus airfare, visa, tips and personal expenses.
