The Yellow Mountains and Monkey Valley

The peaks of the fabled Yellow Mountains rise out of the cloud layer to catch the morning's first light and then hide in the rising fog. A drive up the mountain, followed by a ride in a cable car followed by steps take visitors to several modern lodges among the peaks. While internet was easily accessible, all of the supplies, building material, and luggage arrived at the lodges on the backs of porters. The luggage, dirty laundry and trash were hauled back to the cable car by the same porters.

Monkey Valley is at the base of the mountains. It is a natural area which is home to a large group of Tibetan Macaques. The Macaques, like many animals in China are facing loss of habitat. In this large preserve a group of scientists are conducting their studies. You arrive at the viewing area after a scenic bus ride, a one mile hike and a long set of steep stairs.
